Like a Human Would

dearest,
I’m not a saint,
but do I have to be?
.
I’ve heard whispers of your prayers
for me to find mercy and forgiveness
for me to live without this bitterness
.
forgive me,
for I cannot feel the silver linings
of the open palm that fell on a little girl’s cheek,
of the lies that blurred reality and dreams
.
If I should, then I’d pray,
for this flickering flame in my bones to never rot,
for sanity to engrave deeper in my veins
.
If I should, then I’d pray,
for buttery mornings of sincerity,
for brewing kindness at the darkest nights
.
you may not find purity inside of me,
but if I should, then I’d pray I’ll find peace
in between the heartbeats of this earth—
.
.
.
worry not, my dear
for I will live
like a human would.
